This monumental picture, painted in Lwów in the late 19C depicts the Battle of Raclawice, which took place on 4 April 1794 and marked the victory of the Poles over the Russian invaders. The picture proved a popular success and a focus for nationalist sentiment. After the war, Lwów became part of the Ukraine and the Soviets sent the picture to Wroclaw (although the communist authorities deemed the subject matter too controversial for show until 1985).
