Abbatial Buildings : Michelin's recommendations
This is an admirable complex of monastic buildings. The simple lines of the 14C claustro do Silencio (the cloister of silence) will seduce you - its thin double-columns elegantly supporting three arches surmounted by a rose window. You must visit the capitular hall, in the cloister's east gallery, Take the staircase leading to the Monks' dormitory., which is an immense Gothic hall, 60 metres long. In the enormous kitchen, enlarged in the 18C, you will be surprised at the height of the ceilings and the enormous chimneys. Entering the immense ogival vaulted hall that is the refectory, you will see a staircase surmounted by a beautiful walled colonnade, which leads to the reader's pulpit. A basin (with fountain from the 17C) springs up in the cloister enclosure. The visit ends with the 18C Sala dos Reis in which a frieze of azulejos depicts the monastery's foundation. There, you will see several statues sculpted by monks representing Portuguese Kings up until José I, in addition to a very beautiful Gothic Virgin and child.
