At the far end of a steep-sided valley between wooded heights, some houses surround the monastery of Arouca. Founded in 716, but rebuilt in the 18C following a fire, it forms a Baroque ensemble with a very spare appearance.

Situated on the first floor of a cloister, this museum has some early paintings by Portuguese Primitives (end of 15 - start of 16C) from the Viseu school, canvases (of the Ascension) by Diogo Teixeira (17C) and a 15C statue of St Peter.
