All that remains of this castle, built in the 13 and 14C by King Dinis I, is the merlon-crested keep and half-demolished wall. These surviving sections were restored in 1940. Particularly noticeable is the right tower of the keep which bears 17C console balconies and on the left a gemeled Manueline door surmounted by the Cabral coat-of-arms. The castle accommodates an amphitheatre and the keep should soon have a museology centre.
