Caniçal : Michelin's recommendations

After losing its central role in whaling, due to the 1981 ban, this village stagnated for some years before becoming one of Portugal's premier tuna fishing ports. Near the old port, at the bottom of the village, a small whaling museum recalls this important activity from 1940 to 1981. You will see harpoons, model boats and scrimshaw (teeth from sperm whales).
