The old university occupies the buildings of the former royal palace that were restored and appointed to become the "Paço dos Estudos" in 1540. It has a superb library containing 30 000 books and 5 000 manuscripts referenced by subject. The architecture of the setting alone warrants a close examination. From the upper terrace there are lovely panoramic views over the town.

Pros
I found this unexpectedly good - far more extensive than most European university sites.
Cons
The walk up is a bit much for senior citizens with medical conditions! However it's quite unnecessary as it can be accessed either by lift and funicular or by bus.
