The town, built in the last century, backs onto the Serra da Boa Viagem which shelters it from the north winds, and spreads out around the mouth of the Mondego. In the very open bend of its bay, a huge beach of fine sand and an elegant "seafront" attract many summer visitors every year and make Figueira one of the busiest spa resorts in Portugal... Leisure pursuits are there in force (casinos, concerts, theatres) as well as sporting and traditional folk activities.
