The Strongholds of the east : Michelin's recommendations
These are Medieval citadels or strongholds built between the 17 and 18C to protect the border. Many towns or villages seem to continue to keep guard from their mounted positions or craggy promontories. You must visit Almeida, Castelo Bom, Castelo Melhor, Castelo Mendo, Celorico da Beira, Linhares, Marialva, Penedono, Sabugal and Sortelha in order to see these impressive fortresses.

Pros
Excelente las fortalezas de Almeida (perfecta en su diseño defensivo) y Sortelha, por su pintoresco enclave, por el material de construcción (granito propio del macizo galaico-portugues) y pintorescas casas rústicas.
Cons
En el mapa de viamichelin, no aparece el punto verde de interés turístico de este epígrafe "Plazas fuertes del Este", son varios lugares y sólo aparece en la capitual "Guarda".
