This palace was built in the early 15C by the first duke of Bragança, Afonso, the natural son of King João I. Particularly noticeable is the strong Burgundian influence, especially the roofs and the unusual look of the 39 tall brick chimneys. This was one of the Iberian peninsula's most sumptuous residences, but from the 16C, the court moved to Vila Vçosa, so from that time onwards it was only occupied for short periods.
