Paço dos Duques de Bragança Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

This palace was built in the early 15C by the first duke of Bragança, Afonso, the natural son of King João I. Particularly noticeable is the strong Burgundian influence, especially the roofs and the unusual look of the 39 tall brick chimneys. This was one of the Iberian peninsula's most sumptuous residences, but from the 16C, the court moved to Vila Vçosa, so from that time onwards it was only occupied for short periods. In 1933, the palace was the focus of a massive restoration project which returned it to its former glory. In front of the fasçade, you will notice a bronze of Afonso Henriques by Soares dos Reis (19C). The immense buildings were once heated by huge fireplaces. On the first floor, note the oak and chestnut ceilings of the banqueting and festival halls and the tapestries by Aubusson of Flanders and the Gobelins. You will also see Persian carpets, 17C Portuguese furniture, Chinese porcelain, weapons and armour, Italian and Dutch paintings.
