Originally rather working-class, this quarter with its discotheques, restaurants, fashion and design boutiques (Portugal's top fashion designers have their premises in rua do Carmo), has become the meeting place for Lisbon's trendy set and nightowls. There is entertainment for all tastes, from fado to gay discotheques and from jazz clubs to picturesque bars. And if you want to buy some CDs, the FNAC now has a large store here.
