Near the Ajuda palace, the botanical gardens laid out by the Marquis of Pombal in 1768 have a multitude of exotic plants. The nearby romantic 18C Jardim das Damas is dotted with lakes, waterfalls and ponds. It was here that the ladies of the court once liked to stroll.
