Serra da Lousã : Michelin's recommendations
Crests and wooded hillocks where the bare rock has a violet hue, form the landscape on this mountain whose highest point is 1,202m...In the low schist houses, the inhabitants lived on poor terraced crops (rye and maize) and sheep and goat farms. The systematic reforestation of the slopes in maritime pines sustains the fight against erosion..... The road that takes you from Pombal to Coimbra over the Serra shows you the variety and beauty of the landscapes in this region. As far as Pontão, the road winds around limestone hills dotted with olive trees, oaks, pines and eucalyptus... Then, when you take the old road to Sertã that passes through Figueiro dos Vinhos, the landscape becomes more uneven and cooler, the limestone giving way to marl, which is used in some local brickworks. The crossing follows the winding tracks around the mountain. The views over the cultivated valleys or over the bare summits alternate with wooded landscapes. The trip will take you to Figueiro dos Vinhos, a small city well-known for its terracotta pottery, Castanheira Pêra, Candal, an old town where you can once again see the beautiful gray houses made from schist and Lousã a small town worth a stop to see its noble 18C houses with decorated windows.
