Mafra
: Michelin's recommendations
Located forty or so kilometres from Lisbon, the monastery of Mafra perfectly illustrates the reign of King João V "the Magnanimous"... It has often been compared to the monastery at Escorial in Spain because of its size, its proximity to capital, its votive origin and its palatial and religious role. Its austere appearance is softened by the Baroque decoration.
