The town is built on the slopes of a dry and jagged granite hill, in the centre of a plain, and can be seen from afar, amidst a rocky jumble that runs right up to the walls of the castle... In 1165 this prehistoric origin old town, linked to pagan rituals and occupied by the Romans, was given by King Afonso Henriques to Gualdim Pais, master of the Order of Templars who built the citadel.
