Monsaraz : Michelin's recommendations
Located on the border between Spain and Portugal, this is a very picturesque fortified town. It occupies a strategic position and a remarkable site on a height that dominates the Guardiana valley. When it lost its role as a haven, it was abandoned in favour of Reguengos of Monsaraz, which has meant that it has preserved its shape from the past.
Tourist attractions Monsaraz : Things to see and do
This street has preserved the charm of its past with old whitewashed houses (16C and 17C) whose facades are flanked by external staircases and balconies with wrought iron grills. All the monuments look over this street which ends at the castle.
The old courthouse is located on the left, in the rua Direita. Notice inside an interesting fresco depicting the honest Judge and the dishonest Judge (who carries a curved stick) and, above, a Christ in majesty with his arms raised.
This church contains the marble 14C tomb of Tomas Martins, on which the figures from a funeral cortege are sculpted. You will recognise monks, knights preceded by a priest and, at the foot, a falconry hunting scene.
