This old 16C fortress, converted in the 17C into a citadel in the Vauban style, stands proud with its armour plating of high walls and bastions with sharp edges topped with look-out turrets. It was a state prison before 1974, then a refugee centre for those fleeing Angola. It dominates both the port to the east and the sea to the south.
