Anchored in the sea off the Cape of Carvoeiro, the island stands 12 km from the coast, a mass of red granite. It is the main part of an archipelago consisting of several islands: the Estelas, the Forcadas, and the Farilhões. It is a famous centre for underwater fishing with hook and with spear. Its many marine caves are wonderful. You can get there by boat from the very end of the isthmus of Peniche. The mooring is at the foot of an old fortress (1676).
