God created the earth and man the Douro", so they say here... You have to see the banks of the Douro totally carved into high steps each supporting rows of vines, to comprehend the huge labour of men for more than 20 centuries. An especially fascinating spectacle from mid-September to mid-October when these terraces become the domain of thousands of grape-pickers. This is how the vines are cultivated (42,000 ha) and its the grape which makes port. A trip of about three hours and you will find the town of Lamego, a small pretty Episcopal shopping town especially well-known for its smoked ham and its sparkling wines. Cross the Villa Real with its pretty noble houses and the Solar de Mateus where you can see a superb manor house. The road from Sabrosa to Pinhão will take you through very pretty countryside of terraced vineyards and you should visit Peso da Régua, where the wines of the "Upper-Douro" are produced.
