This old fortified outpost, situated on a mountain shelf near Spain, is an old village whose houses are often decorated with coats of arms and attractive wrought-iron balconies. A pillory stands in the main square, planted with acacias, whose monolithic column is surmounted by an attractive lintel... The approach road to Pinhel, from the south-west, takes you across countryside covered in olive trees and vines.

This road crosses a desolate plateau, dotted with enormous granite blocks forming an almost lunar landscape. Beyond Vale Verde, it crosses a tributary of the River Côa over an old narrow humpbacked bridge.
