This small town, situated between Viana do Castelo and the national park of Peneda-Gerês, is steeped in history. The Romans built a large bridge there on the highway from Braga to Astorga. Later, in the early 12C, Queen Tereja lived there, and gave Ponte de Lima communal freedoms.
