This small town, situated between Viana do Castelo and the national park of Peneda-Gerês, is steeped in history. The Romans built a large bridge there on the highway from Braga to Astorga. Later, in the early 12C, Queen Tereja lived there, and gave Ponte de Lima communal freedoms. Its streets are bordered by Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Baroque and Neo-Classical buildings, and the surrounding area has an abundance of manor houses..
