This ancient strategic place, close to the border, was endowed by King Dinis I in 1290, with a fortified castle, of which only ruins remain. Famous in the 16C thanks to its tapestries, Portalegre prospered in the late 17C when the silk industry took shape there. The town is thus comprised of Baroque residences which give the town its current appearance. Portalegre is the starting point for a trip to the Serra de São Mamede.
