The São Mamede Serra is a small island of green in a dry and stony region. The foliage is thick and varied, and is home to chestnut trees, pines, cork-oaks, weeping willows, almond trees, pines and eucalyptus. Starting from Portalegre the road climbs from the woods, and offers attractive views over Portalegre and the surrounding area. From the top of São Mamede, there is a spectacular panoramic view.
