Situated on a coastal plateau, 436m above sea level, Santana is one of Madeira's more pleasant villages. The villagers lived traditionally in quaint wooden cottages with pointed roofs, surrounded by flowery gardens framed by box hedges. Some of them have survived, notably those near Queimadas.
