Pico Ruivo : Michelin's recommendations
This is the highest point of the island of Madeira. Ruivo peak, which reaches a height of 1862m, has slopes planted with trees and giant ferns and offers an inimitable panoramic view from its summit. It is only accessible to experienced walkers unaffected by vertigo. You reach Pico Ruivo via the Pico do Arieiro (8km on foot, 4 hour round trip). The absence of guard rails in certain places, and the uneven ground makes this a difficult and dangerous walk. The path first skirts a rocky ridge which dominates the Curral das Freiras valley to the left, and the Riveira da Metade valley to the right. A tunnel takes you to Gato cape, and then another tunnel circumvents the difficult climb to Torres peak. You will then come to an immense mountain cirque where the upper tributaries of the Ribeira Seca meet. You will notice on the right near the path, the relics of a stunning volcanic chimney. You can also reach the Ruivo peak by the Achada do Teixeira. This route is much easier since it only takes an hour on a paved path to reach the refuge of the Ruivo peak. From there, it takes 15 minutes to reach the summit.
