Each powerful square, in the state it was in the 17C is in the shape of an irregular polygon comprising six bastions with advance fortifications in front and two monumental gates, north and south, emblazoned with the Royal coats of arms and of the governor. From the north ramparts, there is a pretty view over the Minho valley, Tui and the Mountains of Galicia.
