The Portuguese bank of the River Minho is more interesting to the east of Valença. The river, which appears majestically spread out at the start of the trip, then becomes almost invisible between the steep yet verdant slopes. The paved and winding road goes through large wine-growing villages permanently flanked by trees of trellised vines.
