This shaded city, which was home of the dukes of Bragança, climbs up the hill to a mixture of orange and lemon trees. The town makes money from a few craft activities and by taking advantage of the marble quarries in the surrounding area. The centre of the town, around the praça da Republica has some lively areas, but the areas of the ducal palace and the old town give it more of a museum-town kind of atmosphere which recalls the life of greatest luxury of the Braganças .
