The Palace of the Dukes looks down on a square which has in the centre a statue of João IV. It was the fourth Duke D. Jaime I who undertook in 1501, the construction of this palace. Its interior has been set up as a museum. The stairwell which leads to the first floor is decorated with mural paintings depicting the battle of Ceuta (15C) and the siege of Azamor (16C) by the Duke D. Jaime I.
