Madeira Island is a Portuguese archipelago in the north Atlantic, 650 kilometres (404 miles) off the coast of Africa. Known to the Romans as the ‘Purple Islands', Madeira hosts a colourful variety of flora and fauna. Armed with your binoculars and field guides, follow your guide to the oldest part of the island and to an old Madeira Quinta (‘farm' or ‘vineyard' in Portuguese). The twitter of native birds provides the natural soundtrack to a relaxing day.
