Discover the magic of the wild Algarve countryside. See the Castle of Silves and learn about its construction; catch magnificent views at the top of Foia, the highest point in the region; and marvel at the cliffs near the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse.
Visit the Castle of Silves, standing majestically on a hill overlooking the town of Silves, once the capital of Algarve. Constructed of red sandstone blocks and taipa (a mix of mud and standstone), the castle was seized in 1060 by Fernando I, King of Leon and Castile, before it was reclaimed by the Moors.
Climb to the top of Foia, the highest point near Algarve, standing 2,959 feet (902 meters) above sea level. Take in the coastline, including the famous Ria de Alvor and Cabo de Sao Vincente. Looking north, you can see the hills of Serra de Espinhaco de Cao.
Next, visit Lagos, once named Lacobriga (a name indicating Celtic origins dating back to 2,000 years B.C.). The port was once visited by Phoenicians, and at one time was occupied by the Romans. Arabs built a 10th-century double ring of ramparts during their control of the city, but it did not keep Christians from conquering the city in 1249 A.D.
Learn about the 15th century in Lagos, considered a golden age for the city. Visit monuments like the Governer's Castle, constructed by Arabs. Situated near the sea, explore the Fort of the Banner's Promontory, an 18th-century structure with a moat and drawbridge.
End your tour with a trip to Ponta da Piedade, a lighthouse on the southern corner of the bay of Lagos, and one of the most photographed sites in the area. Examine the bizarre rock formations and fascinating grottos that surround it. Marvel at the nearby cliffs, some standing as high as 66 feet (20 meters).
