Start in Faro with a guided visit to the old part of town. See the Arch of the Villa, designed by Italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri, by order of bishop Francisco Gomes de Avelar. The arch is in the same place where a medieval gate once existed, and now marks the entrance to Vila Adentro (Inner Town), the city's historic center. Note the image of Saint Thomas in the arch, and see where storks make their nest near the top of the structure. There will also be free time for shopping.
Enjoy some time in Olhao, one of the oldest towns in the region, and also an important fishing harbor. Check out some of the peculiar cubist houses, and take a boat trip on the Ria Formosa to see charming fishing villages. Eat lunch on your own in town.
Next, visit Tavira, known as the "Venice" of Algarve, home to the Tavira Castle. Some sources trace a fortress in the same area back to 8th century B.C., but the current castle was likely built in 12th century A.D. The last stop is St. Maria Church, dating back to the 8th century A.D.
