Established in 1971 and covering 70 000ha in the far north of the country, this is Portugal’s only national park. Its purpose is to protect the area’s landscape and archaeological sites, as well as its flora and fauna. Its numerous hamlets are inhabited by a local farming population who are in harmony with the environment and whose traditions remain very much alive.
