Not far from Sagres, Cape Finisterre drops dramatically into the sea. This southwesternmost point in Europe is imbued with history. It was here in the 15C that Henry the Navigator established a school of navigation, which was to be crucial in the great discoveries to come. From the stark promontory of Sagres Point, the view takes in the bay and Cape St Vincent to the west, and the Lagos coast to the east.
