Although the winding road (to be avoided in the event of heavy rain) can discourage some visitors, those who venture as far as this little village nestling at the foot of the Grand Bénare mountain really feel as though they’ve arrived at the ends of the earth. The inhabitants of this former concession, granted in the 19C to a freed slave, grow and sell the famous Cilaos lentils. Îlet-à-Cordes, a hamlet of scattered huts, offers stunning views of the Cirque de Cilaos from its southern end.
