Saint-Leu is famous for its “pipeline” waves, a challenge eagerly met by world-class surfers every June. The town is also known for its pilgrimage to Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette. Held every year on 19 September, it is a reminder that the severe cholera epidemic left no victims here. Those in search of seaside pleasures will enjoy the beach protected by a coral reef, not to mention the fine buildings on the seafront, a legacy from the town’s golden age in the 18C due to the coffee trade.
