Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette
: Michelin's recommendations
Turn left onto Rue Haute at the roundabout in Saint-Leu. A few metres beyond that stands the church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette, built in haste on the cliffside in 1859 when a cholera epidemic was spreading over the island. The disease is said to have stopped at the village gates. Every year a great pilgrimage commemorates this “miracle”, on 19 September. Although of no great architectural interest, it is a very lively place of worship where many islanders enjoy coming to pray.
