Near the Hungarian frontier, Arad’s old Austrian citadel stands on a peninsula formed by a bend in the River Mures. Its streets and squares, and its famous Revolution Boulevard, are lined by fine buildings in Secessionist and eclectic styles, including its palace of culture, town hall (Xenopol Street), and palace of the national bank (Closca Street). A even older vestige of Arad is the Orthodox church of Sts Peter and Paul on Avram Iancu Square at the head of the boulevard.
