Proud to be home to Romania’s first university, Iasi was also an important cultural capital in the late 19C. Its palace of culture is home to four museums including an ethnographic museum. Its rich religious history is evident in the centre and on the surrounding hills: start at the church of the Three Hierarchs (1639), continue to the church of St Sava, the great synagogue, the monastery of Golia, and conclude in the hills with the monasteries of Galata and Cetatuia.
