Flower-decked houses line the way to this major cultural and religious site, set among orchards and conifer-planted slopes. The monastery was founded in 1407 by Prince Alexandru cel Bun, who is buried here. The main church (1554) with its splay-based tower has a classic Moldavian silhouette. Only the veranda paintings are original. Built by Stefan cel Mare in 1498 after his victory over the Turks at Codrii Cosminului, the north tower has an upstairs chapel.
