In order to protect themselves from Tartars and Turks, the Saxons built over 300 fortified churches in the region; this is the largest of them, with a double perimeter wall and five towers added in 1450, including the curiously slanted trumpets tower which raised the alarm in case of attack or fire. Inside, note the fine collection of 15C-17C Ottoman carpets, Baroque pulpit, fresco fragment depicting the Tree of Jesse, and altarpiece of the Flagellation (1522) illustrating manna from Heaven and the Last Supper.
