Founded in 1415, this monastery formerly had a school teaching calligraphy and miniature painting. Its church (1530) has extraordinary wall paintings by Toma de la Suceava, in which a distinctive brick-red hue predominates. In this instructive cycle of virtuous scenes, the painter also includes more colloquial elements. On the south façade, note the scenes depicting the Life of St Nicholas and the siege of Constantinople, in which the Byzantine city bears an uncanny resemblance to Suceava.
