Retaining part of its thick ramparts and three of its five towers, this monastery still has the aura of a fortress. Like the nearby monasteries of Voronet and Humor, the church is covered in frescoes, undoubtedly by Toma de la Suceava: on the south façade is a Tree of Jesse and an amazing siege of Constantinople. Inside, note the fine Crucifixion. Don’t miss the museum in the Clisarnita (voivod’s residence built in 1612) which has the voivod’s carved throne and manuscripts.
