This vast fortified complex is a fine example of the “rural fortresses” of the Saxon territories. Within its imposing perimeter walls are two enclosed courtyards, linked by a vaulted passage. The mid-13C church stands in the second courtyard. The locals stored their harvests within the thick walls, which were fitted with cells and refectories to sustain those within during a prolonged siege.
