Green is the predominant colour in the frescoes of the monastery church, which is also encircled by ramparts. The paintings are later than others in Bukovina (late 16C, by the brothers Ioan and Sofronie Zugravul). The most famous is the fine Ladder of Virtue on the north façade. Note also the painting of Mary on the south façade; she is depicted in finery that is typically Russian. Inside, the paintings (Life of Moses, Life of St Nicholas) also incorporate scenes of everyday Moldavian life.
