Grand Tour of Moscow
Grand Tour of Moscow
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Red Square, where your tour starts, offers views of the colourful onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral, the Lenin Mausoleum, the red walls of the Kremlin and the History Museum, and the luxury GUM shopping centre. The tour takes in the Bolshoi Theatre, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the noble edifice of Lubyanka, the KGB headquarters, and the small churches of Kitai-gorod.
You'll also have the opportunity to explore the streets on the bank of the Moscow River, and visit the Parliament, Duma, and White House, the Olympic stadium, and Sparrow Hills, which is home to the dramatic Stalin-era skyscraper that houses Moscow State University. The tour ends with a visit to Arbat Street, where there is time to watch street performers dance traditional Russian dances and explore the market stalls.
Following the tour, you'll move underground to see Moscow's famously opulent metro system. Carrying up to seven million passengers a day and covering almost the entire city, the Moscow metro is one of the most extensive mass transit systems in the world, and is famed for the fine examples of socialist realist art which decorate many of its stations. This guided tour will take you on a visit to some of the most important stations, giving you a chance to admire spectacular Baroque-styled ceilings and marble statues and busts of communist heroes, stained glass windows, and ceiling mosaics depicting the bright soviet future.
After lunch, you'll visit the Moscow Kremlin, the official residence of the Russian President, and home to the Russian Orthodox Church. This tour will take you on a guided visit to the Armory, the official museum of the Moscow Kremlin. Built by the Imperial architect Konstantin Ton in the 19th century, the museum has a collection that has been growing since 1508, and that includes the Imperial crown of Russia, the throne of Ivan the Terrible, and one of the world's largest collections of Faberge eggs.
