Italian Renaissance architect Aristote Fioravanti designed the Cathedral of the Assumption(1475-1479) with its dazzling composition of bell towers, 17C murals on the main façade, frescoes against a gold background and icons inside. The sculpted wood throne of Monomaque evokes the figure of Ivan IV the Terrible who, like many tsars, was crowned in this important centre of the Orthodox Church.
