The peaceful and aristocratic Christ the Saviour Quarter, or Khamovniki, stands alongside the Moskova a stone’s throw from the Kremlin. This is where one of Russia’s most fabulous art museums is located, dedicated to Pushkin. It is also where they chose to build the immense Cathedral of Christ the Saviour to commemorate Napoleon’s retreat and the failure of his Russian campaign. The sanctuary went through many transformations before rising from its ashes.
