Saint Petersburg Travel guide
Saint Petersburg
: Michelin's recommendations
St. Petersburg is above all an imperial city, created from scratch by Peter the Great on marshland at the mouth of the Neva and embellished by the Empresses Elizabeth Petrovna and Catherine II. It is also a city where two revolutions took place, in 1905 and 1917, as well as a deadly siege from 1941 to 1944 when it was still known as Leningrad. With its bridges, princely palaces extending down the magnificent Nevsky Prospekt, onion-domed cathedrals, museums (among the world’s richest), and prestigious theatres, St. Petersburg is a fascinating destination for visitors. The enchantment continues in the city’s outskirts with the imperial palaces that were the summer residences of the tsars.
