“As it turns out I have spent nearly all my life under the roof of the fountain palace; I entered it poor and I’m leaving it poor...” Thus the poet Anna Akhamatova spoke about the Sheremetev Palace where she lived from 1924 to 1952, receiving poets, painters and writers. Documents retracing her tragic destiny are on display in the apartment. A victim of the Stalinist terror, she was banned from publishing and lost her third husband who, like her son, was imprisoned in a camp. Thankfully, her work was passed on orally.
