As its name indicates, this street was laid out by architect Carlo Rossi, who was particularly prolific in 19C St Petersburg. This master of neo-Classicism left his stamp on the two colonnaded buildings standing across from each other in perfect symmetry, their height equal to the street’s width. One of them houses the prestigious Vaganova Ballet Academy, heir to the imperial ballet school, attended by Nijinsky, Nureyev and Baryshnikov.
